Occupational Health Nurse Education

The law in Finland for Occupational Health Services:

Public Health Nurses working in Occupational Health care. “A licensed public health nurse working full time in occupational health care shall be a qualified Public Health Nurse and shall have passed the specialist studies in occupational health care at a polytechnic, or a minimum of 11 study points (seven credits) in occupational health care studies, within two years of transferring to occupational health care. A person who works in occupational health care for an average of 20 or more hours per week is considered to be working full-time”.

Polytechnics and the Finnish Institute of occupational Health provide specialist studies in occupational health.

Polytechnics (30 study points)

Five Polytechnics in Finland have regular occupational health specialist programmes for nurses. These are the Helsinki, Tampere, Seinäjoki, Jyväskylä, Pori and Kuopio Polytechnics. Occasionally other Polytechnics provide programmes as well. The content of their curricula vary.

The specialist study curriculum for nurses includes 2 educational days per month and can be completed in two years.

The Finnish Institute of Occupational Health (11 study points)

The Finnish Institute of Occupational Health (FIOH) educates most occupational health nurses. Occupational health education is provided to three types of groups:

  • Nurses and Physicians.
  • Nurses, Physicians and Physiotherapists.
  • Nurses, Physicians, Physiotherapists, Psychologists (begins in 2010)
  • The courses include 5-7 individual modules, which are covered in 23 days during a nine-month period. Occupational health education is provided by four of the six Regional Institutes of FIOH: Helsinki, Oulu, Tampere and Kuopio.

In 2010 all OH education will be web courses and only 15 days will be in house training.

A new programme for OH nurses and OH physiotherapists has started in Kuopio, Oulu and Turku Universities in September 2008. This programme is integrated in to the Master's Degree Programme in Health Promotion in Nursing Science, 120 ECTS credits (Master's Degree), Length of studies: Master's degree (2 years). This OHN programme can be integrated also in to Nursing Administration.

This new programme has started also in 5 Polytechnics: in Tampere, Turku, Pori, and Seinäjoki integrated in to the Higher Academic Degree, 90 ECTS.

To day together 23 OHNs and 6 OHPs are taking these degrees.
