FOHNEU represented at an International Safety & Health Conference in Malta

Working together in safety and health – an International Safety and Health Conference Valletta Malta

The Federation of Occupational Health Nurses within the European Union (FOHNEU) was represented at the international safety and health conference held in Valletta on 25 and 26 April 2009. The conference attracted over 100 delegates, and featured talks by local specialists, company directors and top European experts to examine various health and safety perspectives in the context of the woodworking industry.

Malta’s Social Policy Minister, the Hon. John Dalli MP, opened the conference which featured three main sessions on: safety, occupational medicine, health and hygiene, and engineering safety.

The conference was a joint initiative of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), the Malta Occupational Safety and Health Practitioners Association (MOSHPA), the European Network of Safety and Health Professional Organisations (ENSHPO), the University of Malta Centre for Labour Studies

(Occupational Safety and Health), and was supported by the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA).

Nattasha Freeman IOSH President chaired the event.

Founder of MOSHPA, Dr La Ferla’s long-standing collaboration with IOSH provided this unique opportunity for Maltese and other OSH professionals to share their knowledge and expertise at this prestigious gathering.

Bernie Jackson, FOHNEU Vice President, represented FOHNEU and informed delegates on the Aims of the Federation and on the role of the Occupational Health Nurse in industry, in particular the woodworking industries.

The Vice President also informed delegates about the new Masters online degree programme now available through the University of Sheffield to harmonise occupational health nursing education in Europe.

“A Masters in Medical Science in Occupational Health Nursing was launched at the FOHNEU Congress in London in September 2007.  Offering a standardised recognised qualification will make a huge contribution to the capability and capacity of Occupational Health Nurses in Europe and to the acknowledgement of the important role they play in the health and safety of working populations”.

The two-day ‘Working together in safety and health’ event aimed to promote the adoption of collaborative and co-operative approaches in safety and health between the different professions. FOHNEU represents the voice of Occupational Health Nursing in the European Union and as such the Vice President of FOHNEU was particularly pleased to have the opportunity to collaborate and exchange information with other health and safety professionals on how occupational health nursing is integral to all health and safety teams and as part of the team approach to problem solving and health surveillance activities in workplaces throughout Europe.

Professor Edward de Bono, inventor of lateral and creative thinking, made the keynote speech on how people in general should work together to achieve success. Professor de Bono showed delegates how, by thinking creatively, simple and effective solutions can be applied to solve problems through the use of lateral thinking.

Dr de Bono is a native of Malta and an international renowned creative thinker and best-selling author of Six thinking hats and Lateral thinking: a textbook of creativity.

FOHNEU wishes to acknowledge the support of Warwick IC Systems in part funding the Vice President’s travel costs to attend the Malta conference.
